Construction Training for Adults Creates Lasting Impact in the Hartlepool Community
There’s something particularly rewarding about seeing practical construction skills developed through training put to use for the wider community.
Learners from the Invest People Group Construction Academy have designed and built a series of mini libraries as part of a community project delivered in partnership with NC Group.
The mini libraries have been delivered to one of Hartlepool’s Community Hubs and placed across several wards, creating welcoming spaces where residents can share books, connect with others and develop a love of reading within their communities.

Putting practical construction skills into practice
As a specialist construction training provider, we help adults develop the practical skills, recognised qualifications and confidence they need to progress towards careers in the construction industry.
Projects like the mini libraries allow learners to apply new skills to a real project, meaning learning is a practical experience with real purpose.
Supporting Hartlepool communities through construction skills
The completed mini libraries were delivered to Hartlepool Borough Council by Lee Childs and Becky Childs and will form part of a wider restorative approach within the community.
Installed across the wards, they provide accessible places for people to exchange books, discover something new and connect with others in their local area.
The project is particularly timely during the National Year of Reading 2026, a UK-wide initiative encouraging people of all ages to rediscover the enjoyment of reading and make it part of everyday life.
For our learners, it means the skills they have been developing at the Invest People Group Construction Academy are helping to create something that can continue benefiting local communities long after the project is complete.
Construction training with wider social value
The mini libraries demonstrate how construction training can deliver wider social value, combining skills development and employability with practical projects that benefit local communities.
For our learners, it is about more than achieving a qualification. Projects like this allow adults to develop practical, relevant skills, build confidence and take meaningful steps towards employment and successful careers in construction.
